Liver Cancer

The common liver cancer is Hepatocellular carcinoma cancer (HCC) and spread from colon cancer.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the right upper abdomen. It presents as a vague dull ache.
  • Weight loss, occurs because cancer of cancer process, poor appetite and reduced digestion.
  • Jaundice – This yellowish discoloration on the eyes and skin. It is due to inability of liver to excrete bile product.
  • Swollen abdomen. This is caused by water called ascites within the abdomen cavity. Its caused by the inability of the liver to function properly.

Diagnosis

Blood test, Ultrasound, CTSCAN, MRI are used to establish a diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer.

  • Surgery is recommended for early cancer.
  • Chemotherapy is recommended for certain type of advanced
    cancer.
  • Radiotherapy is recommended for advanced cancer.
  • Multimodal treatment – Some patients benefit from a combination
    of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  • Palliative care – for very advanced cancer supportive care (i.e pain
    relief, nutrition, emotional support) is recommended.
