Types of obesity surgery

  • Gastric balloon(See separate pamphlet)
  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Mini gastric by-pass
  • Gastric by-pass
  • Billio-pancreatic procedure (BPD)

Sleeve Gastrectomy

This procedure is indicated for people with a BMI above 40 or people with a BMI of 35 with an obesity related disease. It is done Laparoscopically and it involves removal of part of the stomach. This induces the amount of food eaten and also induces early satiety

Advantages of a sleeve Gastrectomy

  • Performed  laparoscopically
  • No anastomosis (joining of the intestines)  done
  • Achieves adequate weigh loss
  • Leads to resolution of associated diseases
  • Quicker recovery after surgery
  • Earlier return to the normal activities
  • Comparatively, it costs less

Mini Gastric by-pass

Mini Gastric by-pass is effective in weight loss and resolution of the diseases that are associated with obesity.

In mini-gastric bypass, only one anastomosis is created.

Advantages of Mini-Gastric-Bypass

(Similar to those of Sleeve Gastrectomy)

Gastric by-pass

Gastric bypass is very effective in weigh loss. Many anastomosis (joining of the intestine). It is associated with higher complication rates.

World over the number of gastric by-pass performed has declined.
